This year the Home Hemodialysis
Symposium was expanded to 15
sessions with invited speakers, and
included two nursing sessions and one
patient panel. In addition, there were a
record number of abstracts. Selected
abstracts filled two slide forums and one
poster forum. Professor Carl M.
Kjellstrand, MD, was the 2000 recipient of
the Annual Award for Lifetime
Achievements in Hemodialysis. This year,
for the first time, an award was given for
the best abstract in hemodialysis. The winner
was Steven R. Ash, Lafayette, Indiana,
for the abstract, “Concentrated Sodium
Citrate (23%) for Catheter Lock.” Volume 4
of Hemodialysis International will be published
later this year. A record number of
manuscripts have been submitted.
The Symposium on Home
Hemodialysis started in Baltimore 5 years
ago with two sessions and has since been
growing in scope. In Seattle, four years ago,
there were five slide sessions and one
poster session. Starting with the
Symposium in Denver 3 years ago, we published
the first volume of the proceedings,
Home Hemodialysis International, 49 pages
in length, containing 11 papers. Two years
ago in Nashville, there were seven slide
sessions, and the second volume of Home
Hemodialysis International was expanded
to 72 pages and included 14 peer-reviewed
papers. Professor Vittorio Bonomini, MD,
became the first winner of the Annual
Award for Lifetime Achievements in
Hemodialysis. Last year in Charlotte, there
were 11 sessions, including nursing and
patient forums. Professor Paul E. Teschan
became the second recipient of the Annual
Award for Lifetime Achievements in
Hemodialysis. Volume 3 of Home
Hemodialysis International expanded to 80
pages with 18 articles.
Two international societies related to
hemodialysis were founded in San
Francisco: The International Society of
Hemodialysis and The Society for
Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology.
Both societies intend to have annual sym-posia
as part of the Annual Conference
on Dialysis.
Plans are underway for the 21st
Annual Conference on Dialysis, to be held
February 17 – 19, 2001, in New Orleans,
Louisiana. The 7th Symposium on Home
Hemodialysis will be renamed the
Symposium on Hemodialysis. We intend to
expand the scope of the Symposium and
add more sessions with invited speakers.
We would also like to include more slide
and poster sessions, so we are looking forward
to the submission of abstracts related
to hemodialysis.
