Whereas hemodialysis patients
constitute a major part of
nephrology practice, there is yet
no forum where hemodialysis is the main
focus of attention. Therefore, many physi-cians,
nurses, and other health profession-als
involved in hemodialysis therapy felt
the need to create a society of their own.
Drs. Todd S. Ing, Carl M. Kjellstrand,
and Zbylut J. Twardowski sent a letter of
invitation to professionals participating in
the upcoming Dialysis Conference, and
other likely supporters, announcing an
exploratory meeting to be held in San
Francisco prior to the 20th Annual
Conference on Dialysis. Fifty persons
responded positively as interested in cre-ating
a society.
A group met at the Moscone
Convention Center on February 26, 2000.
Carl Kjellstrand, MD, chaired the meeting.
After thorough discussion, those present
voted unanimously to establish the
International Society for Hemodialysis
(ISHD). The consensus was that the
Society should be international and inter-disciplinary
with physicians, engineers,
nurses, dieticians, social workers, pharma-cists,
and other health professionals inter-ested
in hemodialysis. A list of ISHD
Founding Members is shown below.
Dr. Ing was elected Interim President
and Dr. Twardowski was elected Interim
Secretary. The group was in consensus
that the ISHD would be registered in
Illinois and an organizational meeting
would be held during the American
Society of Nephrology meeting in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, in October, 2000.
Founding members present also agreed
that the ISHD would endorse and support
the Hemodialysis Symposium at the
Annual Conference on Dialysis.
