Forty years ago, when nephrology was
in statu nascenti, nephrologists did
most procedures for their patients,
including arteriovenous shunt implantation,
fistula creation, and catheter insertion.
The situation has changed dramati-cally
in recent years; now radiologists and
surgeons perform most of the procedures
for nephrology patients. However, a group
of nephrologists never stopped doing procedures,
and others, disappointed with the
cooperation with radiologists and surgeons,
learned procedures and established
well-equipped facilities in their hospitals.
One of them, Jack Work, MD, Shreveport,
Louisiana, USA, was invited to present a
workshop on Interventional Nephrology
during the 6th Symposium on Home
Hemodialysis in San Francisco. This provided
the impetus for those attendees
interested in interventional nephrology to
have a meeting after Dr. Work’s workshop.
There were about 50 physicians and
nurses at the meeting. In an informal vote,
they indicated their support for the creation
of the Society for Diagnostic and
Interventional Nephrology (SDIN), and
also expressed the desire that the annual
meetings of SDIN be a part of the Annual
Conference on Dialysis. The Society is not
yet formally organized, but a steering
committee of four persons was charged
with the task of organizing the SDIN:
Stephen R. Ash, MD, Lafayette, Indiana,
Gerald A. Beathard, MD, Austin, Texas, W.
Charles O’Neill, MD, Atlanta, Georgia, and
Jack Work, MD, Shreveport, Louisiana. It is
planned that the Society will be organized
before the 21st Annual Conference on
Dialysis in New Orleans, Louisiana, in
February of 2001.
